Abstract

245,924. Turner, I. Dec. 23, 1924. Fixed - abutment type; valve-gear; valves, distributing and cut-off.-In a reversible rotary engine having outwardly - sliding vanes c, which may be actuated by a cam h as described in Specification 235,784, an exhaust port v is located towards each end of each working-chamber x. Each port v is controlled by a piston valve v<1> acting directly thereon and operated by fluid pressure which is directed to either set of valves, for forward or reverse running, by means of a distributor comprising a double poppet valve i actuated by a reversing lever j. Steam enters a central chamber k and one or other of the side chambers k<1> which communicate through pipes l with the respective pairs of exhaust port pistons v<1>. Relief valves k<2> are lifted from their seats by the poppet-valve spindles i<1> in order to release the pressure behind the pistons v<1> of the exhaust ports to be brought into operation. In changing over the lever j, all the pistons v<1> are momentarily under pressure to keep the exhaust ports closed, so that the engine is slowed down for reversal by the trapped steam. Rotary inlet valves g<1> are driven by skew gearing m on a shaft n driven by skew gears m<1> from the main shaft o. A hand-wheel p<1> effects axial travel of the shaft n to regulate or reverse the timing of the valves in relation to the rotor. The rotary valve g<1> is fitted with a liner g<2> which can be turned to regulate the cut-off by quick-pitch screws q<1>, Fig. 4, movable axially by a fork q<3>. In a modification, a mechanical reversing-gear is provided between the engine shaft and the inlet-valve actuating shaft, so that the latter rotates constantly in the same direction and retains the given setting irrespective of the direction of running of the engine.
