Movable-abutment type; valves, distributing and cut-off; valve-gear.-A rotary engine having outwardly-siding abutments working in a number of concentric stages is provided with means for reversing and for connecting the working- stages either in series or parallel. The rotor comprises piston members 5, 6, 7 secured to a shaft 4 and working in chambers Q. P, O formed by cylinders 2, 3, 1 in conjunction with sliding abutments 17, which may be actuated by fluidpressed pistons 25, or by other means. Fluid is supplied from a steam chest 31 to the pistons 25 by valves 30, and is exhausted by valves 33, both sets of valves being actuated from a cam 39. Each chamber 0, P is divided by its piston into inner and outer working-spaces, each with its inlet and outlet ports for forward and reverse working, valve-gear under the control of a single lever being provided for supplying high-pressure steam to all the stages simultaneously for either direction of working, or for connecting the stages in series for multiple expansion for either direction of working.
