Abstract

323,483. Daw, A. W., and Daw, Z. W. Oct. 1, 1928. Fixed - abutment type ; working-fluid supply; cooling parts; packing vanes.- The motion of a multiplevaned piston member 4 which oscillates in a cylinder divided by partitions 3 into a number of chambers is transmitted to a rotary crankshaft by spur gearing 10 on the axle 7 of the piston member which engages a toothed quadrant 11 carrying an arm 12 which is linked to the crankshaft 15 by a connecting rod 13. The crankshaft 15 may he to one side of the cylinder, as shown in Fig. 6, which illustrates an arrangement of two engines side by side, or may pass through the hub 7 of the piston member. An internal-combustion engine is shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the admission and exhaust for each chamber comprised between a partition 3 and a piston vane 5 being controlled by nested sleeve valves 17, 18. The valves' 17, 18 are linked to wrist plates 27, 29 which are oscillated by cams 35<a>, 36<a> driven by eccentrics on a halfspeed shaft 32. The cams have a lostmotion in recesses 37, 38 in the wrist plates 27, 29 so that for one stroke of the piston member one wrist plate is stationary but is moved on the next stroke, the other wrist plate being moved on the first stroke and stationary on the second: the recesses 37, 38 are of a length corresponding to half the eccentric throw with an allowance for the thickness of the cam. Cooling of the piston is effected by oil or water under pressure to prevent the formation of steam. The cooling fluid is fed through a pedestal 58 and swivelling pipe 45, Fig. 13, to the piston axle 7a and thence through passages 44 to pockets 7i, 7<c> in the hub and vanes and passes out by a swivelling pipe 45a to a. pedestal 66. The pressure of the fluid acts on plungers 51 to maintain vane - packing strips 50 against the cylinder walls. Cooling fluid is also fed to jackets 41, 41<a> in the cylinder and around the valve housings 2 to pockets in the partitions' 3. The cylinder end walls are fitted with steel liner plates with integral sleeves to form bearings for the axle 7. Internal-combustion engines are water or steam jacketed, steam engines are steam or air jacketed, and compressors are water jacketed.
