Abstract
1423512 Reciprocating pumps and motors; axial piston IC engines T W BUNYAN 22 Jan 1973 [25 Jan 1972] 3454/72 Headings F1A and F1B [Also in Division F2] A pump, motor or I.C. engine comprises two banks of cylinders 1, 2 Fig. 1 with pistons 17 connected by rods 18 reciprocated by rockers 22 on an inclined crankpin 11 of a crankshaft 9, inlet and outlet connections 3, 4 being connected to manifolds 5, 6 in cylinder blocks 1, 2 and each cylinder having inlet and outlet ports 28, 29, Fig. 4, the inlet ports of cylinder block 1 being connected to inlet manifold 5 directly and the outlet ports to manifold 6 via ducts 35, and the inlet ports of block 2 being connected to manifold 5 via ducts 36 and the outlet ports to manifold 6 directly. The corresponding inlet and outlet slide valves 30, 31 of the cylinder banks are inter-connected to operate in antiphase by rods 37 passing through ducts 35, 36 and may be operated by a cam 58 on crankshaft 9, Fig. 1, acting via rockers 54, Fig. 4, or by tappets actuated by the pistons 17, Fig. 9 (not shown). The valve-operating cam 58 may be angularly adjusted relative to the crankshaft by a hydraulic vane motor, Fig. 11 (not shown), to vary the valve timing and hence the pump or motor displacement. In Fig. 10 (not shown), fluidpressure operated pistons on the valve rods can be operated to hold the inlet valves open and the discharge valves closed to render selected pairs of cylinders inoperative. For a reversible motor, the tappet valve gear of Fig. 9 (not shown), has alternative settings for each direction of rotation. Crossheads 19 on piston-rods 18 are guided by the side walls of the ducts 35, 36. The ducts are secured to the cylinder blocks by coupling flanges and gaskets (see Division F2). The crankshaft may be an integral forging, or may be constructed in two parts forming two hollow halves of the crankpin which are secured together by a pre-tensioned bolt, Fig. 12 (not shown), balance weights 80, Fig. 1, being provided. A two-part sleeve 11 surrounds the crankpin and has flanges 12 joined by bolts 13.
