Abstract

Slide valves, cylindrical ; rotary conical valves. -In engines having a number of cylinders parallel to the shaft 8 and driving through a swash plate 5, the inlet of the pressure fluid to the cylinders is controlled by a conical valve 14 driven from the shaft and moving in a bush 15 adjustable for reversing the engine. The bush is connected to a ported ring 40 on the spindle 16. Steam is admitted by a throttle valve 18 which opens before and closes after the exhaust valve 19 so that the pistons are always held up to the swash plate, there always being some back pressure in the cylinders to the movement of the pistons. Spacing plates 43 are used to adjust the position of the valve 14 on the shaft. In addition to the terminal exhaust ports 32, each cylinder has an extra exhaust port to reduce the compression on the up stroke of the piston, the exhaust passing through a passage 27 in the valve and port 28 in the bush to a passage 29 in the cylinder head; a spindle is used to control the outlet from this passage 29 into the main exhaust passage 30. This exhaust may be led to an adjacent cylinder which is in its instroke. If the exhaust is under vacuum the crank case is connected to the exhaust space through a non-return valve in order to lower the pressure in the crank case.
