Abstract

445,072. Rotary engines. HOLZKNECHT, F., 509, Richards Street, Vancouver, Canada. June 22, 1935, No. 18005. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary engine comprises a rotor 5 with pistons 22 which move around an annular chamber 6, and co-operate with recesses 17 in abutments 15. Pinions 17 on the latter are geared to a toothed driving wheel 21. An annular space 7 in the rotor allows working fluid to pass from an inlet 9 to passages 10 into the chamber 6. A similar space 8 allows exhaust fluid to flow from the chamber 6 through passages 11 to an exhaust port 13. Segmental casing walls 23 act as seals when the pistons are passing through recesses 17. Spring-pressed packing rings 20 are provided. The working fluid, which may be steam, exerts a force on the teeth of pinions 17 helping to drive them in an anticlockwise direction. In a modification the spaces 7, 8, communicate with each other through ports in the rotor. Conduits in the pistons allow working fluid to pass from the spaces 7, 8, to the chamber 6, and exhaust ports from the latter lead to an exhaust manifold.
