Abstract

28,386. Brown, A. Dec. 30. Fixed - abutment type, with outwardly sliding vanes. The invention relates to reversible engines having two diametrically opposite abutments, a port on both sides of each abutment and valve gear for connecting these ports to steam and exhaust passages for forward and reverse running, and consists in the provision of a rotary cut-off valve, Fig. 3A, which is placed between the steamsupply pipe U and the passages Y, Z leading to the reversing-valves. The point of cut-off is varied by means of segmental liners Y<1>. These liners are formed integral with a sleeve, which surrounds the shaft and passes through one of the main stuffing- boxes. The vanes are pressed outwards by springs enclosed in thimbles which slide in and out of recesses provided for the springs in the vanes. The sides of the vanes and the abutments are packed by spring-pressed strips.
