Abstract

Movable-abutment type; packing drums etc.; valves, distributing &c.-Rotary abutments 19, 20 housed in chambers 2 at the junction of the two semicircular sections of a casing 1 co-operate with a piston vane 12 on a disk 4, which contains the inlet and outlet passages 14, 15 and is packed laterally by adjustable plates 6 having a series of concentric grooves 5 registering with similar grooves in the faces of disks 4 so as to utilize condensed steam for packing. The abutments 19, 20 have similar grooves 19<1> co-operating with eccentric grooves 25<1> formed in adjustable plates 24, 25, and are driven from the shaft 8 by helical gearing. The passages 14, 15 lead respectively to the hollow shaft 16 and a pipe 17, either of which may be used as the admission pipe according to the direction of running. A fixed sleeve with adjustable openings may be provided to control the cut-off at the orifice of the pipe 17.
