Abstract

139,529. Marks, E. C. R., (Dominion Tygard Engine Manufacturing Co.). July 18, 1918. Movable - abutment type; valves, distributing and cut-off; valve gear and valve actuating mechanism; packing drums, vanes, and abutments; adjusting parts for wear; back pressure, reducing. - The exhaust from the working chamber passes through ports I, J in the rotor to a central chamber in the rotor surrounding an axially movable valve H, and escapes by way of openings Q to chambers 23 in the frame which communicate with a common exhaust outlet. Working fluid passes from the valve H to the working chamber through the channels I, J in the rotor member. The ports in the valve H and in the rotor C are formed with opening edges parallel to the axis of the shaft, and with closing edges parallel to one another but inclined to the axis of the shaft. This provides for varying the cut-off by moving the valve axially. The engine may be reversed by moving the valve to register the valve H with passages in the rotor opening at opposite sides of the vanes. The drums and the vanes are provided with grooves by which leakage of steam is reduced. The casing rotor and abutments are conical in form,. and the abutments are axially adjustable by screws 15 so as to permit the parts to be set so as to reduce friction and wear by ensuring a thin film of steam between contacting members. An elastic coupling between the engine shaft C and the driven shaft consists of a casing S having recesses each containing two conical-ended coiled springs 13 on one member, and on the other a pronged spider 13<1> the prongs of which enterbetween the springs in the recesses.
