Abstract

1097. Dudley, J. Jan. 14. Movable - abutment type; valves, distributing and cut-off.-In a rotary engine of the geared - vane type in which two sets of vanes act alternatelv as pistons and abutments, being locked against backward rotation when serving as abutments, one set of vanes 12, 36 is carried by a cylinder 7 and fitted with exhaust valves 14, while the other set 9, 10 is carried by a sleeve 8 secured to a boss 29 supporting pairs of inlet valves 11. The boss 29, which drives a shaft 24, is secured to a hollow shaft 6 which admits steam to the inlet valves 11 through radial passages 1, one valve of each pair being open and one shut. The inlet valves 11 and the exhaust valves 14, which communicate with a fixed casing a having an outlet 15, are suitably operated by the mutual engagement of trip levers supported on their spindles 30, 32. The cylinder 7 drives a shaft 4, and both driven shafts 4, 6 are held against backward rotation by roller-clutch mechanism 21.
