Abstract

19,343. Nichols, F. P. Aug. 23. Fixed-abutment type; valves, distributing and cut-off.-Relates to rotary engines of the fixed - abutment type having outwardly - sliding vanes arranged in pairs on each side of a central flange on the rotor and adapted to act as cut-off valves. Motive fluid is 'admitted through a hollow shaft 8 to a central chamber. 13 in the rotor, which is pro- (vided with passages 24 to conduct the fluid to the slots in which the vanes 18 slide. One side 28 of each vane is cut away, Fig. 12, and allows the fluid to enter the working chamber when the vane projects from the rotor. The other side 27 is provided with a recess leading to its extremity, so that exhaust fluid can always escape on that side through passages 25 to the space 26 and outlet pipe 6. The rotor is provided with a central flange 17, on either side of which the vanes 18 are made to bear on the linings 23 of the casing by rockers 19 pivoted on springs 20. The cam contours of the linings 23 are each staggered with respect to the other.
