Abstract

450,669. Rotary engines. GUINNESS, E. E., Allendale, Coalway Road, Wolverhampton, ELWELL, M., The Laurels, Tipton Road, Woodsetton, Staffordshire, and WATTS, R. C., Cleveland Works, Cleveland Road, Wolverhampton. Oct. 17, 1934, No. 15691/36. Divided out of 450,595, [Group XXIX]. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary pump 150 and an engine 151 in a hydraulic transmission gear for example are provided with roller vanes 166 forced outwards by liquid under pressure, and may also have cams provided to guide the vanes. The pump shaft 160 has a flange 162 which fits into a recess in the rotor 163 and is secured thereto by pins 164. The vanes are hollow and filled with cork, but may be solid and have fluted outer peripheries. The casing members 159 contain guide passages to lead liquid from pump delivery ports 172 to engine inlets and from the engine exhausts to the pump inlets 171. A variable output from the pump is secured by sliding portions 168 controlled by rods 200, 204. The abutments 169, 170, are recessed at their ends to permit extensions 175 of the parts 168 to approach the line 3 ... 3, Fig. 1. During rotation of the rotor, liquid is forced through slots 179 to beneath the vanes and passes by way of 178, 177, to beneath alternate vanes. A vane pressed inwards by a casing bore acts through the liquid to press another vane outwards. The motor rotor 184 is secured to a flange 183 on a sleeve 181 which is mounted on roller bearings. The motor is of fixed capacity, but may be provided with sliding stator parts as in the pump casing. Liquid supply to the transfer passages in castings 159 may be secured through inlets 206 which are connected with an outer reservoir 208. The clutch mechanism used in the system is described in Specification 450,595. To secure reversal of drive, a modified arrangement Fig. 7, includes rotary valves 221 mounted on spindles parallel with the main shaft. These valves have, chambers connected by cross-over passages linking up the pump delivery with the engine inlet, and the engine exhaust with the pump inlet. Liquid is supplied to the valve from an exterior source, by way of a passage 231. The levers 200 controlling the movement of the stator parts 168, are operated by a turnbuckle 229 which couples the ends of rods 228 having right and left-handed threads respectively. The length of the motor rotor may be varied in different systems. Specifications 430,159, and 450,625, [Group XXIX], are referred to.
