Abstract
302,947. Master, S. D. Aug. 22, 1927. Fixed-abutment type: driving pumps; valves, distributing and cut-off; valve-gear; jarring, preventing injury by.-A rotary engine pump or the like comprises a hollow cylindrical rotor open at both ends and concentrically mounted within a cylindrical casing; a number of arcuate shaped vanes are pivoted in pockets in the rotor and are oscillated therein by arms on the vanes cooperating with cam or like means situated within the rotor. In Fig. 7 is shown a combined engine and pump in which steam admitted under control of a valve 26 through a port 22 in the casing periphery acts on curved vanes 14 oscillating in open pockets 13 in the rotor to drive the rotor which is also formed with peripherally closed pockets 50 in which curved vanes 39 are oscillated to effect the pumping action, drawing in and discharging the pumped fluid through ports 47, 47<1> in the side walls of the casing. The vanes 39 have a clearance with the walls 51 of the pockets 50 to prevent damage by solids in the pumped fluid. The two sets of vanes are actuated by arms 19, 42 having rollers engaging grooves 21, 44 in two sets of cams. To permit the supply of steam after the pockets have passed the steam supply port ducts 27 are formed in the periphery of the rotor extending for a suitable length. Corresponding ducts 49 are formed in the side wall of the rotor to maintain the closed pumping pockets in communication with the pump ports. Fig. 5 shows a construction of engine in which the vanes 14 are oscillated bv crank shafts 32 extending between planet gear wheels 35 circulating round a fixed central gear wheel 36. Packing strips 12, 18 are provided on the rotor periphery and on the vane edges. The steam supply grooves 27 may be formed on the inner surface of the casing and means may be provided for varying their length so as to vary the cutoff. A number of rotors may be arranged in advance of one another on the same shaft to avoid dead centres.
