Abstract

437,939. Rotary engines. BEUDELS, J., 87, ChaussÚe de Charleroi, Gilly, Belgium. July 2, 1935, No. 18927. Convention date, July 2, 1934. [Class 110 (ii)] The engine is driven by expanding fluid, and comprises vanes 7 mounted on ball bearings 10 supported by a central, fixed, shaft 11, and an eccentric rotor 5 driven by the vanes and containing packing members 12 to allow the vanes a sliding- rocking movement. The inlet and exhaust ports each comprise a number of holes 21<a>, 22<a>, arranged as shown and also helically along the lengths of the cylinders A, B. The last line of holes H lie along a generator of a cylinder. Fig. 3 shows the means of operating the valves by a cam 44 and rollers 47, 48, placed in arms 45, 46, pivoted at 45<a>, 46<a>. All the holes covered by the valve 43 are opened before the valve 42 commences to move. Working fluid enters by one of passages 21, 22, controlled by the position of a piston valve 25, the second passage leading to the atmosphere or a condenser. An additional exhaust 23 or 27 is provided depending upon the direction of motion of the rotor. Pipes 36 ... 39 lead from the spaces 21, 22, to the ends of cylinders 34, 35, and the pressure of the working fluid, or the exhaust, acting through these pipes causes one piston, 32 or 33, to be up and the other down, and so close one exhaust 29 or 31 and open the other. The valve 25 may occupy a central position allowing both passages 21, 22, to be open to exhaust. Fig. 5 shows a means for moving the rod 40 by means of a lever 52 pivotally mounted in a stirrup 53, which is supported on bearings 54. Before the cam 44 can be rotated the rod 40 must be actuated, until the lever 52 reaches one of the slots 55a, 55b at right angles to the slot 55d. The vane tips carry packing bars supported on tension springs to prevent frictional force due to centrifugal action, from becoming excessive. Further packing bars are supported in the vane ends. The rotor is packed by fixed rings 13, 15, on the casing and rotor respectively, and a rubbing ring 14 connected by a spring 16 to the ring 13. The rotor is mounted on a shaft 17 in bearings 19 and provided with gears 20 for transmitting the driving torque to external machinery, which may be mining winch gears.
