Abstract

602,836. Rotary engines &c. BAGHUIS, L. H. Nov. 7, 1945, Nos. 29698 and 29699. Convention dates, July 21, 1942 and June 10, 1943. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary hydraulic engine or pump comprises two concentric relatively rotatable members, the inner member having an even number of pistons and the outer member having an even number of cylindrical abutments housed in equally spaced pockets and rotating in equal directions about axes parallel to. the engine shaft, there being at least two abutments in the working space between adjacent pistons. The inner member 7 has inlet ports 19 and outlet ports 20 on either side of the pistons 12, which communicate with axial passages 18 and 21 respectively within the shaft 10. The periphery of each piston extends along a longer circular arc than the pocket 23 in which each abutment is housed. Each pocket has a local enlargement 26 forming a chamber which becomes filled with liquid exerting a balancing pressure on the abutment. The six abutments 13 are driven through gearing at twice the speed of the inner member 7 with respect to the outer member. Slots 22 are provided to facilitate escape of liquid trapped between a piston and an abutment recess. Alternatively, a clearance may be provided between the end faces of the pistons and the side walls of the recesses. In an alternative construction, the gears are eliminated by forming gear teeth on the inner member 7 and abutments 13, continuity of meshing being obtained by making the axial width of the pistons and abutment recesses less than that of the toothed surfaces. The pistons are formed as a separate member which is loosely mounted in a diametrical bore of the inner member 7. In a construction in which two or more units are mounted coaxially with common shafts for the inner members and abutments, the pistons and abutment recesses extend across the full width of the toothed surfaces, and continuity of meshing is provided by maintaining a suitable difference of phase between the units.
