Abstract

1279679 Rotary positive-displacement machines CORNELL AERONAUTICAL LABORATORY Inc 4 July 1969 [5 July 1968] 33943/69 Heading F1F In a gear-type compressor passages 56 allow a proportion of the working fluid in an outlet region 24 to re-enter spaces, or "wells", between the gear lobes 33 approaching said region so as to exert positive torque on the gears and reduce noise, said torque being due to the dynamic effect of the fluid upon the lobes. Fluid coolant is circulated through passages 40, 42. In a second embodiment, which acts as an expander, a plate 62 is fixed to one end of each gear, the two plates being at opposite ends of the gearpair, and each plate containing passages 64 through which a proportion of the working fluid can escape from the wells into an outlet region 21<SP>1</SP> by way of slots 55 and thus exert positive torque due to reaction.
