Abstract
578,809. Gear pumps. PRECISION DEVELOPMENTS CO., Ltd., and OLAH, G. Feb. 21, 1944, No. 3217. [Class 110 (ii)] Excessive hydraulic pressure due to trapping of fluid between gear teeth is avoided by arranging that, whenever two pairs of teeth are simultaneously in contact, the contact point on the entering pair of teeth is nearer to the pitch point than the point at which the teeth of the preceding pair are simultaneously in contact with each other. For involute gears the addendum of the driving gear is made greater than that of the driven gear. Hydraulic sealing between the non-driving tooth flanks is prevented by provision of backlash or by chamfering the edge of the flanks. The driving gear 11 is integral with a hollow shaft which is journalled in two central sleeves 10, 12. The driven gears 51, 52 rotate on stationary shafts 71, 72 located in sleeves 4, 6 and 14, 16 respectively. The sleeves are located in three interconnecting bores, in the main body 1, (which also serve as enveloping surfaces for the outer peripheries of the gears. Inlet slots I<1>-I<4> connected to an inlet hole 44 and outlet slots O<1>-O<4> connected to an outlet hole 45, equalize the fluid pressures on the gears. Neck portions on the sleeves and countersinks in the end covers 2, 21, together form annular spaces 42 which are interconnected by means of grooves 41 formed in the end covers, Fig. 7. Cross bores 43 connect the grooves in one end cover with the inlet slots I<1>, I<2> and the grooves in the other end cover with the outlet slots O<1>, O<2>. Leakage is collected into a hollow stud 18 from grooves 46 worked all round the gears in the main body. The driving shaft 31 is supported in a self-aligning ball-bearing 35 and is connected to gear 11 by means of a dog-clutch 37.
