Abstract
1308295 Rotary pumps or motors JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 8 May 1970 [25 Feb 1969 14 Aug 1969] 9906/69 and 40631/69 Heading F1F A rotary hydraulic pump or motor comprises a pair of mutually inclined intermeshing bevel gears 36, 37 mounted in a generally spherical chamber 34, 35 formed by a pair of housing members 30, 31, high pressure and low pressure ports being formed in the housing members adjacent to and on each side of the zone of intermesh, and a wedge-shaped sealing member 47 Fig. 6, being fixed to the housing member 31, to seal a portion of the tooth spaces of each gear between the high pressure and low pressure ports. The gears 36, 37 are mounted on hollow shafts 38, 39 rotatable in bearings 32, 33, and surround a spherical boss 45 mounted on a wedge-shaped support 46 secured to the housing member 31. Pressure balancing of the gears 36, 37 is effected by grooves formed in the surfaces of the chambers 34, 35 and communicating with the high and low pressure ports. High pressure fluid is also fed to the bearings 32, 33 to assist balancing, elliptical seals 75 resulting in an assymetic load on the shafts 38, 39. Leakage fluid entering the bores of the shafts 38, 39 is returned to the low pressure ports via passages 72, 73 in the boss 45. In the modified arrangement of Fig. 7 (not shown), an impeller is mounted on the end of one of the gear shafts to feed fluid to the inlet ports. In the modifications of Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) fluid is fed to the gears via passages in the wedgeshaped support and the boss, and via the hollow shaft of one of the gears and passages in the boss respectively.
