Abstract

1,132,050. Rotary pumps and motors. TRW Inc. Dec.22, 1965[Aug.20, 1965], No.54388/65. Heading F1F. A fluid-pressure seal pack in a rotary pump or motor, particularly a gear pump, comprises a bimetal wear-plate 48, Fig. 1, a gasket 50 and a sealing web 52 with the gasket and sealing web received in a recess groove system 42 in the lower half 14 of the pump housing 10. The wear-plate 48 on its face 48d, Fig. 3, adjacent the gears 20 is formed with a shallow groove 48e and on its opposite face with a similar but somewhat shorter and wider groove 45h communicating with the groove 48e by a port 48L through the plate positioned on the minor axis of the plate opposite to a similarly positioned port 48k. The gasket 50, Fig.2, is divided into pressure zones A, B, C 1 , C 2 by suitable webs, so that the zone A is connected to the pump inlet port 38 through the port 48k and the zone B to the pump discharge port 38<SP>1</SP> through the port 48L. The zones C 1 , C 2 are also connected to the pump discharge port via the groove 45h to seal the wear plate 48 against the gears 20. With the zones A, B, C 1 , C 2 symmetrically disposed the removal of the plate 48 and the turning of it through 180 degrees will permit reverse flow through the pump. The zones B, C 1 and C 2 will then communicate with the port 38 which will now be the discharge port and the zone A with the port 38<SP>1</SP> which will now be the inlet port. The groove 48e permits the distribution of pressure-fluid at discharge pressure about the gears 20 and also to substantially balance the pressure on both sides of the wear-plate. The invention may be applied to pumps and motors including rotors having outwardly sliding vanes.
