Abstract

756,958. Rotary engines and pumps. BUTLER, B. S. Jan. 13, 1955 [Oct. 16, 1953; Nov. 11, 1953], Nos. 28665/53 and 31312/53. Class 110(2) A rotary pump, compressor or motor comprises inner and outer rotors 111, 112 which are coupled together by suitable gearing on three pins 124 located by lugs 125. The outer rotor is made up of two parts which are bolted together and formed integral with rings 118. The rings extend into annular grooves 115 formed in the inner rotor so as to contact the concentric walls of the said grooves at diametrically opposite positions, see also Fig. 2 of the Complete Specification (not shown). An inlet bore 117 extends through the inner rotor and communicates with the two grooves on the same side of partitioning walls 116 which divide each annular groove into two crescent-shaped chambers and extend through gaps formed in the rings 118. The outlet ports 122 are disposed on the opposite side of the walls 116 to the inlet ports and communicate with a common outlet. Valves may be employed to close the inlet and outlet ports during part of the cycle. In a modification (see Figs. 1 and 2, not shown), accompanying the Provisional Specification the inner rotor has three annular grooves on each face thereby forming six annular chambers 15-20 and the outer rotor has six corresponding integral rings; each chamber has a radial dividing wall 22, 23, 24 and the chambers 15, 16, 17 are connected in series as are the chambers 18, 19, 20. In said modification both rotors carry like spur wheels which mesh with a pinion 46. The inner rotor is journalled in plates 44 which may be rotatably adjusted relative to the casing in order to adjust the sealing relation of the inner rotor grooves relative to the rings. If desired, the co-operating cylindrical faces of the ring and the, or each, annular chamber may be provided with interengaging teeth and depressions and only one annular chamber and ring may be employed. The cross-section of the, or each, annular chamber may be in the shape of a frustum of a cone. The machines may be used as two-stage turbine-compressor aggregates in which case the volume of one of the two annular chambers may be much greater than that of the other. Again, the outer rotor may be driven and impart a drive to the inner rotor through the radial dividing walls in which case the inner rotor is preferably formed of aluminium alloy. The bearings and gears or equivalent couplings of the machine may be immersed in the working fluid within a fluid-tight enclosure such as a fuel tank into which fuel oil is to be pumped by the machine.
