Abstract

1,024,874. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. Oct. 2, 1964 [Oct. 4, 1963], No. 39100/63. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston internal combustion engine comprising a piston or rotor which rotates within and rolls around the inner profile of a suitably shaped stator wherein the rotor is formed with a longitudinal bore having a profile co-operable with a suitably shaped stationary shaft to provide an epitrochoidal or hypotrochoidal rotary system of the n and n+1 lobe type. As shown in Fig. 2, an engine stator 1 provided with an air-fuel mixture admission port 3, an exhaust port 4 and a spark-plug recess 5 is flanked by pump stators 8, 9, Fig. 2, each having an inlet port 10 and a discharge port 11 which are in turn flanked by side-plates 12, 13 supporting a stationary shaft 16 of substantially triangular cross-section which passes through the three stators. The shaft 16 cooperates with a four-lobed bore 15 in each of the rotors so that the rotors rotate with a planetary movement around the shaft. Rotors, 6, 2, 7, are all of similar four-sided profile with the flanking rotors 6, 7 of smaller size and functioning as pumping rotors. The slator 1 may also be formed with additional parts 18, 19 oppositely disposed in relation to the spark-plug which are utilized as an inlet and outlet ports, respectively, through which fluid is pumped to supplement the pumping rotors and substantial balance the torque reaction of the combustion gases in the firing chamber. In another embodiment, the engine stator 20 is four-lobed and co-operates with a five-sided rotor 21 having a five-lobed bore 22 which co-operates with a stationary four-lobed shaft 23. The rotor bore and shaft in this case functioning as the pump. The engine stator in this case has two inlet ports 24 and two exhaust ports 25 and two spark-plug positions so that on each revolution of the rotor ten firings take place. In this embodiment the side-plates may be connected to the engine stator 20 by means of threaded rings 37, 38 which have conical bores engaging complementary conical faces on the side-plates. The power take-off may be provided by hydraulic or pneumatic means by way of one or more pumping chambers without any intermediate gearing. The power take-off may be used in reverse for engine starting, a fluid power reservoir or separate fluid power source being used.
