Abstract

1,158,148. Rotary-piston machines. PERKINS ENGINES Ltd. Aug. 31, 1966 [Sept. 10, 1965], No.38837/65. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston machine comprising a rotary piston mounted for eccentrically generated planetary rotating movement within a housing having a peripheral wall and spaced end walls which with the piston define variable volume working chambers includes a stationary shaft on which is rotatably mounted an eccentric which in turn rotatably mounts the piston. The machine is described as an I. C. engine of the kind having a three-sided piston 18, Figs. 1, 2, planetarily rotatable in a housing 10 having a two-lobed epitrochoidal peripheral wall 19, spaced inner end walls 14, 12 through which the shaft 16 passes and outer end walls 15, 11 fixedly supporting the shaft. The shaft 16 is formed with a set of gear teeth 21 accommodated in an annular recess 22 in the mid axial portion of the eccentric 17 which engage a ring of teeth 25 formed on or secured to the inner peripheral surface of the piston 18. The eccentric 17 is journalled in bearings 23 for rotation on the shaft 16 and formed integral with or secured to flywheels 29 fitted with balancing weights to balance the eccentric whilst the piston 18 is journalled in bearings 26 for rotation on the eccentric. The arrangement permits a shaft of adequate size, symmetrical arrangement of the bearings, wider teeth on the gearing with consequent reduction in load thereon, and improved lubrication of the bearings and gears and cooling of the piston. To lubricate and cool the engine, oil from a sump 48 beneath the housing is raised by a pump 60 and passed through a cooler 61 and filter 62 to an axial passage 64 in the shaft. The passage 64 branches radially at two levels 65, 66 to supply the bearings 23. Oil seeps along the bearings to lubricate thrust bearings 50 and the gears and also passes through ducts 67 to lubricate the bearings 26. The oil can then pass through radial passages 71, 72 into piston cooling chambers 45. The oil leaves these chambers through passages 75 which on rotation of the piston uncover radial ducts 76 in the shaft which are connected by axial ducts 77 with the sump. The lower flywheel 29 incorporates a bevel gear 30 which meshes with a bevel gear 33 secured to the engine output shaft 32 which also drives the engine accessories. The machine is also described having twin pistons in twin cavities one above the other with an intervening wall between the pistons. The eccentrics may be arranged in phase or 180 degrees out-of-phase with appropriate balancing. Several arrangements of power plants are shown which include several engine units with the units mounted on a common wall.
