Abstract

1,017,568. Rotary-piston engines. NSU MOTORENWERKE A.G. and WANKEL G.m.b.H. Oct. 10, 1963 [Oct. 13, 1962], No. 39975/63. Heading F1F. In a rotary-piston I.C. engine of the trochoidal n and n+1 lobe type annular members 14, 15 are attached to end faces of an eccentric 7 on which the piston 8 is rotatably mounted, and metallic sealing-rings 16 are lodged between said members and the end walls of the piston to prevent lubricant entering the working chambers. A rubber ring 17<SP>1</SP> is provided in each sealing ring to effect sealing between the ring and an adjacent flange 19 on the periphery of the associated annular member, the ring being biased in the direction of the piston by a leafspring 17. Each of the annular members has a central tubular hub 22, or 23, in engagement with an aperture in the adjacent side wall 3, or 4, of the engine housing, spiral grooves 23 being formed in said hubs to seal a clearance gap 24. Cooling of the piston is accomplished by circulation of lubricant through passages 30, 31 in the annular members and a cavity 13 in the piston, the lubricant also serving to lubricate gearing 10, 11 for controlling the planetary motion of the pistons, a bearing 9 supporting the piston on the eccentric, and bearings for a power-output shaft 6. Each of the rings 16 may be replaced by a ring 16<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 3, not shown) which is pressed by springs against a ring 25 attached to the piston and having a flange 25 mating with a groove in the associated annular member. An outwardly-inclined gap 27 between each annular member and the corresponding ring 25 serves to return lubricant by centrifugal action to cavity 13. Alternatively, sealing between the annular members and the piston is effected by the provision of a narrow gap between each ring 25 and the associated annular member (Fig. 4, not shown), or each ring 25 has axially-extending flanges mating with grooves in the adjacent annular member to form a labyrinth seal (Fig. 5, not shown). The annular members may be integral with the eccentric and one of them may be omitted, in which case sealing of one side of the piston is achieved by application of an axial load to press the piston against the adjacent side wall of the housing.
