Abstract
893,938. Rotary engines. NSU MOTORENWERKE A.G., and WANKEL G.m.b.H. Aug. 27, 1959 [Oct. 2, 1958; April 23, 1959; July 21, 1959], No. 29362/59. Class 110 (2). In a rotary engine of then and n + 1 lobe type, Fig. 1, cooling oil is fed to the bearing-points 14, 22 through channels 11, 13, 15 and is discharged through channels 17, 18, 19, 20, as shown, leakage oil past the bearing-point 22 collecting in a discharge chamber 23. The rotor may be provided with cavities of corresponding crosssection which are filled with sodium or copper bars, see Fig. 4 (not shown), whilst an annular chamber fed with coolant is disposed between the rotor and its eccentric. The rotor and eccentric may be provided with cooling passages registering with supply and discharge passages in the housing by way of annular conduits disposed in the housing, the eccentric or the rotor, see Figs. 5, 6, 7 (not shown), respectively. Again, the coolant may be fed to the rotor through the shaft 5, Fig. 8, and discharged through associated flywheels 40, 45 under the action of centrifugal force. In another modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), the eccentric and rotor are provided with separate cooling systems passing through the shaft and housing respectively. The rotor, Fig. 10, may be provided with a cavity 85 which is fed with coolant through passages 86, 87 and is provided with a fixed disc 89, 90 having radial or spiral channels for the centrifugal discharge of coolant to conduits 92, 93, 94, 95, see also Fig. 13 (not shown). The member 90 may mesh with the rotor, see Fig. 12 (not shown). In a final modification, Fig. 14 (not shown), the coolant is fed centrally through the shaft to an annular chamber in the rotor disposed between two sets of roller bearings and is discharged through passages in the rotor to annular discharge chambers.
