Abstract

1,063,856. Rotary-piston I. C. engines, motors and pumps. CURTISS-WRIGHT CORPORATION. Oct.31, 1963 [Nov.20, 1962], No.43086/63. Heading F1F. In a rotary-piston I. C. engine of the trochoidal n and n + 1 lobe type, the piston (24), Figs. 1 to 4 (not shown), is cooled by a liquid e.g. lubricating oil, flowing through helical passages (72) therein, the radially innermost sides of said passages being closed by a bearing sleeve (26) attached to the piston and engaging with an eccentric (22) on a power-output shaft (20). The passages communicate with recesses (74, 76) which are situated in the piston beyond the ends of the bearing sleeve. The lubricating oil is delivered to a bearing (46) for the power-output shaft and an opening (64) in the eccentric through passages (54, 56, 58, 60, 62) in the engine housing, the eccentric and said shaft. A proportion of the oil when leaving the opening (64) enters an annular groove (68) in the bearing sleeve whilst the remainder enters the passages (72) in the piston through a groove or flat (66) in the eccentric, a space between the eccentric and the piston, and the recesses (74) on one side of the piston. The helical passages (72) are inclined in a direction according to the direction of rotation of the piston so that the oil flows by centrifugal action towards and through the recesses (76) in the other side of the piston, the oil ejected from these recesses being through an outlet passage (78) in the engine housing. If is stated that the invention is also applicable to rotary-piston pumps and motors.
