1358844 Cooling dynamo electric machines ROTAX Ltd 19 May 1971 [26 May 1970] 25308/70 Heading H2A In a dynamo electric machine, e.g. an alternator, having at least one machine component, e.g. rotor winding end turn 17, mounted for rotation on a shaft 15 having an axial bore 19 for the passage of a cooling liquid, e.g. oil and a cooling liquid distributer 22 mounted on the shaft radially inwardly of the component, for discharging the liquid onto the component by centrifugal force, the distributer comprises walls defining an annular reservoir chamber communicating with the bore 19 and arranged to allow the liquid to flow to an annular flange 32 defining a weir, and a further wall 28 defining a plurality of apertures, e.g. slots 29 disposed radially outwardly of the weir, the apertures being arranged to distribute the liquid leaving the weir to the component when, in use, the shaft, component and distributer are rotated. The weir is provided to ensure an even flow of the liquid, and as shown in Fig. 2, the end turns 17 may be mutually spaced to increase the cooling effect; alternatively, the component may be a rectifier. The liquid may enter the bore 19 through an axial passage in one end of the alternator casing or, as shown, through a path which also cools the stator 10 and comprises a casing duct 20, a scroll 14 defined by the casing 13 and a cylinder 12 in which the stator is mounted, and a further duct 21.
