Abstract
1,039,770. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. Oct. 22, 1963 [Nov. 7, 1962], No. 41659/63. Heading H2A. A refrigerant cooled electric motor has a wound stator 12 and rotor 16 enclosed in a sealed casing comprising end covers 22, 46 which butt against annular ring 30. Each end cover supports both a bearing 36, 60 and rotary sealing elements 94, 126 respectively. In addition, the liquid refrigerant is supplied through pipes 96, 120 in the end covers and distributed by a centrifugal thrower arrangement comprising trough 108 which allows fluid to overflow into distributer 116 which comprises an annular member with peripheral holes. Rotary sealing elements 94, 126 comprise lands 150, 148 which include drain grooves 152, 154 and helically grooved portion 162 cooperating with the adjacent fixed annular face, the helical portion acting to pump back oil which tends to creep through the bearing. The refrigerant fluid is returned from drain grooves 152, 154 to the motor interior through tubes 156, 160. The driving end bearing is a combined thrust and journal bearing, covered with bearing metal 61 and having a thrust washer 66 and a retainer member 68 which is pressed on the shaft. Shaft seals of nylon may be used in cover-plates 72, 79. The distribution of refrigerant may be improved by spraying it, under pressure, over the end windings and into the air gap either by means of a static annular manifold or a rotary inverted annular trough attached to the rotor, Figs. 4, 5, 6 (not shown).
