Abstract
1308315 Cooling electric motors JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 23 June 1970 [25 March 1969] 15505/69 Heading H2A [Also in Division F1] An axial-flow liquid pump comprises a casing 10 having an inlet 8 and an outlet 9 and containing a housing 18, 17, 19 which supports the stator and rotor of an induction motor, a shaft 34 rotatable in bearings 36, 38 in the housing and forming part of the rotor, an impeller 29 carried by the shaft within the inlet, an axial passage 24, 23, 25 between the casing and the housing and connecting the inlet and outlet and through which the greater part of the liquid flows, and means for directing a part of the liquid through the bearings and past the stator windings 35 before returning it to the inlet. A gap 39 allows liquid to flow into the housing and thence through the bearing 38 and a thrust bearing 27, around the windings 35 and through the bearing 36 and another thrust bearing 28 to lubricate the bearings and cool the windings before returning via the interior of the shaft 34 to the inlet 8.
