Abstract
967,465. Rotary engines and compressors. CURTISS-WRIGHT CORPORATION. May 25, 1961 [May 27, 1960], No. 18908/61. Heading F1F. A rotary internal combustion engine of the Wankel type is cooled and lubricated by oil introduced by means of passages 54, 56 in the drive shaft 26 and the eccentric 30, upon which the rotor 10 rotates, to an annulus 58 in the rotor bearing 32. From the annulus 58 some oil lubricates the bearing surface and the rest passes through manifolds 62 into cavities 64 in the rotor provided with cooling fins 65, and through a restricted passage 68 (Fig. 4), which serves to keep the cavities 64 full, to an annulus 70 and passes through a passage 72 to an annular gutter 74. The tangential velosity component of the oil leaving the passage 72 may be eliminated by steering the passage relative to the shaft axis. The invention may also be applied to rotary compressors, pumps and fluid motors.
