A lubricating system in a rotary-piston I.C. engine of trochoidal construction having a liquid or air-cooled casing and a drive unit cooled by air or gaseous fuel/air mixture prior to it entering the working chambers of the engine, includes an oil reservoir 7, Fig. 2, located in the cold region of the casing, as shown partly in a peripheral wall 1 of bi-arcuate epitrochoidal profile and partly in an end wall 2, and a lubricating pump 8, belt or gear driven from the engine shaft 5 in the other end wall 3. Lubricant from the pump 8 passes through a duct 12, Fig. 3, into the incoming air or gaseous mixture slightly upstream of an ellipsoidal recess 11 in the end wall 2. The air or gaseous mixture together with the entrained lubricant passes through axial passages in the piston and an ellipsoidal recess 11 in the end wall 3 before entering the engine and also passes through passages 14, 20 from the respective recesses 11 to lubricate and cool the shaft bearings 15, 16 on either side of the engine, a further passage 14 to lubricate and cool the main piston bearing 17 and a recess on that end face of the three-sided piston 4 adjacent the toothed drive ring 25 to lubricate and cool the latter. A double-flow radial fan 18 is located between the bearings 15, 16 on either side of the piston to assist lubrication and cooling. One or other of the bearings 15, 16 on either side of the piston may be dispensed with whence the fan will be single flow.
