906,387. Rotary internal-combustion engines. CURTISS-WRIGHT CORPORATION. Feb. 3, 1961 [Feb. 5, 1960], No. 4175/61. Class 110(2). In a rotary four-stroke I.C. engine, a substantially triangular-shaped rotor 24, Fig. 1, eccentrically rotatable in an epitrochoid-shaped casing 12 includes on its end faces 26, 28, Fig. 2, adjacent the outer periphery arcuate grooves 60 joining the apices which mount spring- loaded sealing strips 62 and surrounding the shaft bearing 70, a circular groove 68 mounting a spring-loaded sealing ring 66. The former is to prevent the leakage of combustion gases from the engine combustion spaces 32 and the latter to prevent oil leakage. Passages 74 through the rotor adjacent each apex interconnect the spaces between the seals on opposite sides of the rotor. This prevents a build-up of pressure on one face of the rotor with consequent axial movement of the rotor and friction and wear between rotor end faces and associated casing end faces. On rotation of the rotor, the passages 74 connect the spaces between the seals to the intake port 40 to return combustion gases to the engine and so prevent pollution of the atmosphere. In a modification, the intake port is located as a peripheral port similar to the outlet port 44. In this case, a channel 80, Fig. 4, in a casing end wall adjacent the intake port 40a spans the sealing strips 62a.
