Abstract
965,956. Rotary pumps and I.C. engines. YANMAR DIESEL ENGINE CO. Ltd. June 1, 1962 [June 2, 1961], No. 21249/62. Heading F1F. A rotary internal combustion engine of the Wankel type is mounted with its axis vertical for use as a marine outboard motor. The drive to the propeller is through an intermediate shaft 33 splined at one end to fit the engine output shaft 7, and coupled at the other end to a depending propeller shaft 37. An oil pump (Fig. 2) mounted on the intermediate shaft 33 draws lubricant from a sump 13 through a filter 45 and supplies it through passages 29, 31, 24, 25, 26 and 27 to the piston bearing 52 and an upper main bearing 54. The lubricant then escapes into a hollow 11 in the piston 9, where it cools the piston before draining into the sump 13. Cooling water is passed through pipes 17, 19 (to cool the lubricant) and 21 to passages 23 in the engine cylinder 1, before being discharged overboard.
