Abstract

1315307 Turbo-superchargers CAV Ltd 10 Aug 1970 [21 Aug 1969] 41798/69 Heading F1G The invention relates to a turbo supercharger for an internal combustion engine and comprises a radial inward flow turbine 12 and a centrifugal compressor 14, the turbine rotor 19 and the compressor rotor being mounted at the ends of shaft 20. The shaft is mounted in a bearing housing 24 which is formed with an annular recess 25 to which air under pressure is supplied through ducts 29 in the compressor casing, the air passing through passages in a bearing sleeve 23 so as to form an air journal bearing; air also passes from the recess 25 to the rearward sides of the turbine and compressor rotors so as to form air thrust bearings. The bearing housing 24 is received within a casing 27 which is formed in two parts, one part comprising part of the turbine casing 13 and the other part comprising part of the compressor casing 15. The bearing housing is formed with stepped end portions which are received by corresponding portions of the casing parts. The casing parts 27 are held together by an annular clip 28 engaging flange portions of the casing parts. The turbine casing is formed with an axial outlet 16 and the compressor casing with an axial inlet 17. The turbine rotor blades and the bearing sleeve are formed of silicon nitride.
