Abstract
939,704. Rotary engines and pumps. CURTISS-WRIGHT CORPORATION. May 1, 1961 [May 2, 1960], No. 15683/61. Class 110 (2). A rotary internal combustion engine, compressor or pump has an aluminium alloy rotor 10 with a plurality of apex portions 38 engaging the inner surface of a housing 12, and driving (or being driven by) a shaft 34 by a steel eccentric 36 integral with the shaft. Fig. 3, in which the components are drawn partly out of engagement for clarity, shows an outer steel sleeve 50, shrunk into the rotor 10 and an inner steel sleeve 52 shrunk into the outer rotor, and bearing on the eccentric 36. The shrink-fit of sleeves 50 and 52 is such that the outer sleeve 50 will be fixed to the rotor at all temperatures, whereas the inner sleeve 52 which expands less, becomes free below the operating temperature, and acts as a floating bearing. The inner sleeve however is provided with radial splines 56 which engage splines 60 on the rotor. The inner ring is also provided with a gear ring 54 which engages a gear ring 58 fixed to the casing. In the embodiment shown the gear ratio between 54 and 58 is 3 : 2 ; these gears are provided to relieve the loads on the apices of the rotor. On the end of the inner sleeve 52 remote from the gear ring 54 is secured a nut 62 having a flexible flange 64 which bears against the outer ring and prevents lubricating oil escaping from between the two sleeves 50, 52.
