Abstract

1,120,231. Mechanical seals. WORTHING- TON SIMPSON Ltd. 23 July, 1965 [8 July, 1964], No. 28102/64. Heading F2B. [Also in Division F1] An annular clearance 4 between a centrifugal pump impeller 1 and the pump casing 3 allows some of the pumped liquid to pass to an annular chamber 12 to cool the shaft seal 7. The liquid returns to the impeller eye through balance holes 11, the return flow being assisted by a helical spring 8 which, in addition to pressing the shaft seal 7 against a stationary ring 6, also acts as a worm pump. A cylindrical partition 13, which may be cast integral with the impeller, may be provided to separate the two directions of flow. A distance bushing 10 between the spring 8 and the impeller may be omitted.
