Abstract

980,810. Seals. DOWTY FUEL SYSTEMS Ltd. Jan. 8, 1964 [Jan. 28, 1963], No. 3483/63. Heading F2B. A centrifugal pump or other apparatus including a shaft mounted for rotation in a housing has a pair of sealing rings 8, 9 which are urged into engagement with a shoulder 4 on the shaft 2 and radially spaced apart, means being provided for supplying a liquid to the space between the rings at a pressure greater than the fluid pressure on the outside of the ring 9 or on the inside of the ring 8. As shown, liquid, in the form of lubricating and cooling oil, is fed through a passage 16 to a cage 11 whence it flows between the rings 8, 9 and the shoulder 4 and also to a shaft bearing 19 via a restrictor 17, which serves to maintain the desired pressure in the cage and allows a greater rate of flow through the restrictor than between the rings and shoulder. The rings may be urged into engagement by springs 15, by the oil itself, or by the combination of resilient members and the oil. A restrictor 16a restricts the flow of oil in the event of seal failure and an axially-adjustable valve 7 ensures that the impeller 1 is not completely filled with liquid as described in Specification 842,354.
