Abstract

1,267,129. Shaft seals. BORG-WARNER CORP. 2 June, 1970 [13 June, 1969], No. 26678/70. Heading F2B. A seal assembly, e.g. for a paper pulp pumpshaft 3, comprises a stuffing-box 2, a fixed sealring 13 borne by a support flange 17, a rotary seal-ring 14, supported by a carrier 30, and sealed to the carrier 30 and to a shaft sleeve 6 by sealing means 36, 37, and spring means 38 within the carrier 30 for biasing the ring 14 towards the fixed ring 13, fluid passages 23-27 being provided for introducing a flushing fluid between the sealing faces 15, 16. The sleeve 6 is held against a shoulder 11 of the shaft 3 by an impeller hub 5, a key 7 locking the sleeve for rotation with the shaft 3, and set-screws (32), Fig. 2 (not shown), clamp the carrier 30 to the sleeve 6, an annular spacing 33 allowing fluid pressure within the pump to act on a rear face 40 of the ring 14. Pins 41 ensure rotation of the ring 14 with the shaft 3, and pressurized flushing fluid introduced through the passage 23 flows continuously between the faces 15, 16 to prevent clogging. In an alternative construction, Fig. 4, flushing fluid flow through the seal may be increased by substituting a flow space 128 for one of a pair of sealing rings 28, 29, Fig. 3, disposed between the ring 13, and the flange 17 into which the ring is press-fitted or keyed.
