Abstract
1361987 Rotary shaft seals BALLAST-NEDAM GROEP NV 3 Aug 1971 [4 Aug 1970] 36508/71 Heading F2B In a centrifugal pump sealing means between the pump casing 1 and the impeller 2 comprises a sealing ring 12, having a first sealing face 32, Fig. 3, adjacent the high-pressure side 56 of the seal and a second sealing face 34 adjacent the low-pressure side 57 of the seal separated by a space 33 communicating by a passage 59 with the low-pressure side 57, the faces 32, 34 being urged into sealing contact with a co-operating face 53 of the impeller by the forces due to the high pressure acting on a first back surface 54 on the ring and the low pressure acting on a second back surface 55. The ring 12 is slidably sealed by an 0-ring 52 on a collar 13 of a flange 11 bolted to the casing rear cover 4 and grease is supplied to the sealing faces through inlet 35 and passages 30. Purgating water which prevents the suspension of sand and water being pumped from reaching the sealing means through the gap 58, Fig. 1, between the impeller and casing, is supplied to the highpressure side 56 through inlet 14. The sealing ring 10, Fig. 2b, at the inlet side of the pump is slidably sealed by 0-rings on a collar 9 of a flange 7 bolted to the front cover 5 and has sealing faces 17, 19 co-operating with a face on the impeller 2 and separated by a space 18 communicating with the low-pressure side, a first back surface 27 subjected to high pressure, a second back surface 29 subjected to low pressure and a third back surface 28 subjected to a control pressure in a space 24 communicating through a throttle 25 and passage 26 with a control pressure source 79, e.g. atmosphere. The space 24 also communicates via passage 23 with the sealing face 19. The modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 for a radial seal comprises a sealing ring 78 formed by segments 77 interconnected by elastomeric material and having faces 43, 44 engaging a ring 76 attached to the impeller 2 and separated by a space 42 connected by passages 41 to the low-pressure side of the seal. The control space 24 communicates via throttle 25 and passage 26 with a control pressure source.
