Abstract

1,032,399. Rotary-piston machines. N.S.U. MOTORENWERKE A.G. and WANKEL G.m.b.H. Nov. 22, 1963 [Nov. 28, 1962], No. 46172/63. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston machine e.g. an I.C. engine, of the trochoidal n and n+1 lobe type comprises a piston 4, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) containing a plurality of cavities 5 which are charged with a liquid coolant through bores in a rotatable shaft 2 supporting the piston on an eccentric 3, or bores in a side wall 1 of a housing for the piston, the coolant being periodically ejected from each of the cavities by acceleration forces through an outlet opening 7 and at least one collecting pocket 10 formed in an annular body or ring 9 which is fixed by a pin 8 to be rotated with the shaft. Each of the pockets 10 is in register with one of the openings 7 when the acceleration forces acting on the coolant in the associated cavity are directed radially towards the shaft. The ring 9 is provided with an outwardly-orientated flange or edge 15 which overlaps a portion of the wall 1 to prevent coolant passing into a gap between the wall and the piston containing a sealing ring 40. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the pockets 10 are formed in a cylindrical member or body 16 attached to the shaft 2 in register with an axially-extending passage 17 for the coolant. In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the collecting pockets 30 are formed in an axial extension 32 of the eccentric 3<SP>1</SP> in alignment with an axiallyextending passage 37 for the coolant. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the collecting pockets 28 are formed in a ring 9<SP>1</SP> having a hub 27 attached to the shaft 2 and a sealing ring 52 engaging with a ring 50 fixed to the piston, the pockets being inclined relative to the shaft to promote the flow of coolant by centrifugal action. In another modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the collecting pockets-22 are formed in an annular body 18 attached to the side of the piston by screws 19 and carrying a sealing ring 25 which engages with the piston. Each pocket has an outwardly-inclined radially-outermost surface 21 to effect ejection of the coolant by centrifugal action. The outer surface of a hub portion 20 of the body, includes a helical oil-return groove 26.
