Abstract
1,027,983. Rotary piston I.C. engines. NSU MOTORENWERKE A.G. and WANKEL G.m.b.H. Feb. 25, 1964 [March 7, 1963], No. 7736/64. Addition to 984,773. Heading F1F. The rotary-piston I.C. engine claimed in the parent specification is improved or modified in that inlet and outlet openings 20, 21 (Fig. 1, not shown) for the coolant in each cavity 12 within the piston 7 are situated remote from the axially-extending boundary walls 13 of the cavity so that a proportion of the coolant supplied to the cavity remains therein when the cavity is periodically discharged (Fig. 4, not shown) and reduces the overall rate of flow of coolant through the interior of the piston. The engine may be further modified in that each inlet opening 20 is situated at the same radial distance from the axis of rotation M 2 of the piston as the associated outlet opening 21 so that when each cavity is discharged a proportion of the coolant therein flows back down the corresponding inlet passage 22 into an annular inlet chamber 14 for the coolant which is located between the end face 7a of the piston and the adjacent end wall 1 of the engine housing. The engine may be even further modified in that some of the cavities do not include an outlet opening 21, the coolant being periodically returned to the chamber 14 through the inlet opening 20. The discharge of each cavity is effected by acceleration forces acting on the coolant due to the planetary motion of the piston.
