Abstract

345,667. Rotary engines and pumps. SHEPPARD, H. P., Granville House, The Spa, Gloucester. Oct. 21, 1929, N o s. 31945/29 and 23589/30. [Class 110 (ii).] A motor or pump comprises a rotary member such as the eccentric 10, Fig. 1, fast on the shaft and working in the upper part 11a of a closed casing 11 containing a liquid, which forms the reciprocating working link between the eccentric and a piston P reciprocating in the cylinder C. Packing means such as slides or rollers 13 prevent flow of liquid from the upper chamber to the lower 11b ; any leakage may be replaced or the amount of liquid may be regulated by an auxiliary pump excess being removed through a drainage channel R. A second drainage trap may be used above the channel R or a gap may be left between the upper and lower cylinder parts to make certain that none of the liquid enters the working space in the cylinder. The working piston may be of less diameter at its upper part P<1>, Fig. 7, than at the part where it enters the casing 11. The annular chamber B formed by the corresponding two-diameter cylinder construction is used as a buffer chamber; or the working surface of the piston may be of larger diameter than its lower end. The working cylinder C may be connected to the casing 11 by a pipe. Suitable valves or ports are provided according as the machine works as a compressor steam engine, internal-combustion engine, &c. ; Fig. 1 shows ports A, E for the admission of air and exhaust of products of an engine working on the two-stroke internal-combustion cycle using heavy fuel. In a modification a rotary machine of 'the type described in Specification 130,839, [Class 110 (ii), Rotary engines &c.], is used ; this comprises an outer rotor 24, Figs. 12 and 13, with four recesses 23<1>-23<4> forming pockets along its length and an inner rotor with three projections 22 which keep the four pockets separate. The pockets communicate through ports 26<1>-26<4> with four liquid-containing chambers C<1>-C<4>. The liquid in these chambers in turn acts on or is acted on by fluid controlled-in the arrangement shown-by a valve in the valve seating 27 ; inlet and outlets 16, 17 for the fluid are provided. In a modification when constructed as a four-cylinder internal-combustion engine pistons rest on the transmission liquid.
