Abstract

732,394. Rotary engines or pumps. OVRETVEIT, K. A. Jan. 18, 1954 [Jan. 19, 1953], No. 1444/53. Class 110 (2). A hydraulic or pneumatic pump or engine of the outwardly-sliding vane type is provided with three separate working chambers 12, 14, 16 at 120 degrees to each other. Pairs of vanes 44, in a rotor 4, are maintained in position by cross rods 54 and may be balanced by fluid under pressure being admitted to the undersides of the vanes. Inlet and outlet ports 32, 38 are provided in the cam-shaped ends 30 of each working chamber which extend slightly beyond limits 64, 66 of the radial section 26, Fig. 6, of a working chamber. Channels 68, Fig. 2, lead from an inlet, for a hydraulic motor, to the undersides 46 of the vanes as the vanes traverse the cams across the inlet ports. Similarly, channels 70 lead from the outlet side of the motor to the spaces 46 as the vanes traverse the cams across the outlet ports. Alternative means of balancing fluid pressures at the tops and bottoms of the vanes are described in the Specification. Fig. 6 shows grooves 76 to which fluid under. pressure passes by way of a duct 80, and a sealing sector 78 between a vane and the rotor. In another arrangement, grooves in the end covers allow pressure fluid to pass to the undersides of the vanes, Fig. 3 (not shown). Fig. 4 shows a rotor provided with end rings 88 which extend radially as far as the vanes move, or slightly beyond, to protect the ends of the vanes and reduce wear of the end covers.
