Abstract

596,902. Rotary engines and pumps. HILL, H. R. Aug. 3, 1945, Nos. 20061/45 and 7506/46. [Class 110 (ii)] The motor or pump has sliding vanes 12, the ends of which engage annular parts 14, 15 of a rotor 16 which can be moved radially to vary the eccentricity of the rotor relatively to a drum 11 which is slotted to support the vanes. The rotor 16 is supported on a bearing 18 and the drum 11, which is secured to a shaft 5, on a bearing 8. Segmental inlet and outlet ports 26, 27 in the drum disc 7 communicate periodically with the outer and inner crescentshaped working chambers. A rotor 24 has an annular inlet port 28 and outlet ports 29, 30 which are eccentric to but co-operate with ports 26, 27 to allow fluid t( pass into and out from the crescent-shaped chambers as the two rotors rotate, the relative gyratory movements of the parts 7, 24 causing the ports 26, 27 to move across the lands between the valve ports 26, 29 and 30 to effect the required valve action. The port 28 leads to passages 34, 38, and the ports 29, 30, lead to a conduit 10 by way of passages 31 and 32. The rotor 16 is moved downwards, Fig. 1, by means of a hand wheel 23, parts 19 sliding between guides 20. The direction of flow of the fluid may be reversed by causing the eccentricity of the two rotors to lie on the opposite side of a horizontal axis passing through the centre of the shaft 5. A resilient thrust disc 21, supported by a block 3, is arranged to apply axial pressure to the bearing block 19 so as to press the cylinder unit endwise against the drum 11 and disc 7. Two machines, one an engine and one a pump, may be combined in a fluid-transmission system. The first Provisional Specification refers to Specification 580,890.
