Abstract

462,054. Rotary engines. SELD, F. A. VON, and REINCKE, R. M. Aug. 1, 1935, No. 21874. [Class 110 (ii)] An inclined disc type of engine or compressor comprises a rotating disc b having slots to accommodate plate pistons c, which slide through packing members f in a slider e. The disc b has a spherical hub n mounted on a stub shaft o, and is driven by a shaft k through teeth d. In Fig. 4, springs g are placed in pockets e<1> at the ends of the slider e. In addition, working fluid may be admitted to these spaces, for dampening purposes. A further arrangement, Fig. 3, has a disc b provided with packing rings h. Oil or cooling water may be passed through an annular channel m. A groove l divides the periphery into two halves, so that expansion is allowed for. The exhaust gases of the engine supplied with air or fuel mixture by the compressor, may be led through the channel m for the purpose of driving the disc b, which, in this case, possesses vanes p. Compression chambers between pairs of vanes, may be connected by side passages s for pressure equalizing purposes. For large machines, in addition to the drive of gears d, Fig. 2, the disc b and piston c can be driven by means of the driving shaft k through springs which are coupled to the centres of the round rods f. In a further arrangement, the shaft k drives the pistons c direct, and the disc b through a double Cardon joint. The compressor may first operate as an engine to drive the main engine until the latter has started up and then the compressor reverts to its main function. An elastic coupling or free-wheel device may be used between the engine and compressor.
