Cam-actuated pumps; valves, arrangement of. -In a reciprocating mutli-cylinder engine which may be used as a pump or compressor, the pistons 6 are connected to a non-rotating wobbler plate 8 which drives a shaft 11 by means of an inclined crank or eccentric 9 and a main shaft 17 by means of a bevel-gear 15 on the wobbler coacting with a bevel-gear 16 on the shaft. The wobbler is prevented from rotating by a gear wheel 13 thereon engaging a fixed crown wheel 14. The shaft 11 drives a rotary distributing valve 24 provided with an inlet passage 29 through which the pressure fluid flows from a chamber 30 to passages 27 opening into the cylinders 2. The fluid exhausts through a passage 33 opening into a chamber 35. Another set of inlet and exhaust passages may be arranged in the valve in another plane so that by sliding the valve along the shaft 11 by means of the linkage 36 - - 39, the engine may be reversed. In an internal-combustion engine, two sets of opposed cylinders and pistons are used, and two wobblers at opposite ends of the engine. Both wobblers drive the shaft 11 which carries a valve cam-sleeve driven at half speed by epicyclic geaxing mounted on the shaft. In another form of wobbler, two discs are mounted on a spherical bearing through which the shaft 17 passes and each carries gear wheels 13, 15 driving opposed gear-wheels. The peripheries of the discs are loosely enclosed in an annulus engaging the piston rods 7. In another form the wobbler is mounted on a gimbal ring.
