Abstract

497,630. Rotary engines. BANCROFT, C. April 27, 1938, No. 12583. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary engine or pump of the geared vane type has pistons 29, 30, in pairs, given alternate accelerating and de-celerating motions by means of bearing pads 21 which coact with blocks 28. A member 19 is provided with two discs 20 eccentric to the crank-pin 15 to an extent equal to the crank throw radius. The pads 21 have their centres spaced from the crank-pin axis in excess of the crank throw. Fixed annular members 22 have shoulders 22a concentric with the crank-shaft, the end of each shoulder being shaped to form a rectilinear guideway 23 which extends diametrically. In each guideway slides a block 24 having a circular hole to receive the disc 20. Cylindrical members 25 rotate on the shoulders 22a and have flanges 25a sliding on the inner faces of end plates 11. A cylindrical sealing band 26 overlies the members 25. One pair of pistons is fastened to one flange 25a, and the other pair to the other flange. To each pair of pistons is fastened a ring 31 which forms, with the flanges 25a, a ring cylinder. Screws 32, 34 attach the pistons and rings to lugs 33, 35 respectively. Rotation of the crank-shaft 14 causes movement of the axis of the member 19 through a circular orbit having the crank-shaft axis as its centre, and the member 19 is caused to rotate twice about the axis of the pin, or once with respect to the casing in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the crank-shaft, for each revolution of the latter. For use as an internal-combustion engine, inlet and exhaust ports 36, 37 and a combustion chamber 38 are provided. Scavenging is effected by an incoming charge of gas. More than two pairs of pistons may be provided. An engine having four pairs of pistons is described. This may be modified so that during the upper 180‹ of movement the pistons are driven by working fluid, and during the lower 180‹, gas is drawn in by the piston, compressed, and delivered through a port close to that which admits the working fluid. The rings 31 may have flanges extending towards each other outside the pistons.
