Abstract

241,975. Carey, R. F. July 21, 1924. Revolving-cylinder pumps.-Relates to pumps of the kind in which a number of cylinders are arranged parallel to an axis around which they revolve, motion being imparted to the pistons by discs or swash plates capable of being positioned at an angle to the axis of the apparatus. The cylinders are formed in a cylindrical block of metal 1 forming a rotor 2 and provided with pistons 6 at each end to which motion is transmitted by means of non-rotatable discs or swash plates 13, the angles of which to the axis may be varied. The rotor is formed a running fit in the casing 4 or a bushing 3 fitted therein and each cylinder is formed with a port 7 centrally of its length communicating with ports 8, 9 formed in the outer casing. In Figs. 2 and 3 the cylinders are provided with ball pistons bearing against swash places 13 and the casing is provided with non-return valve 21 and replenishing valves 22. Fig. 4 shows cylindrical pistons 6 at one end of the cylinders in which case connecting rods 14 are attached thereto and to rings 15 driven at the same speed as the rotor by means of a universal joint 16 and pressing against thrust bearings. 18 in the non-rotatable swash plate 13. In order to allow limited lateral movement of the rotor it may be driven either through an Oldham coupling or, as shown in Fig. 5 by teeth 19 cut on the shaft or on a sleeve splined or keyed thereto loosely engaging internal teeth cut in the rotor. The apparatus may be surrounded by an outer casing 23 having a centrifugal pump 24 for maintaining a vacuum as described in Specification 238,001.
