Abstract

444,706. Rotary engines. WICHA, A., 2, M³nchnerstrasse, Dresden, Germany. Sept. 25, 1934, No. 27553. Convention date, June 6. [Class 110 (ii)] [See also Group XXIX] A rotary engine, pump, or compressor, of the intermittent abutment type has segmental pistons 3 moving around an annular chamber bounded by the casing which forms abutments 18, 19, and 20, 21, and an inner guide cylinder 2. Rollers, approximately circular, or balls 15, in one or more pairs, extend axially slightly beyond the piston ends, and are gripped by pressure plates 4, which are secured between nuts 8 and a collar 7 on the shaft 6 on which they are keyed. The rollers roll on the plates 4 and cause the radial movement of the pistons 3 during their passage around the chamber. Angular-shaped grooves may be provided in the plates 4, and the rollers 15 make contact with the sides of the grooves. The end faces of the pistons lie on radial lines passing through the centre of the casing, which lies at a distance E below the centre of the shaft 6. In a modification the end faces of each piston are arranged so that the resultant pressure vector passes through the point of support of the piston or centre line of the rollers. When the machine is used for gas compression, the delivery port is considerably smaller than the inlet. A modification describes the use of two axially-displaced working chambers separated by a pressure plate. The invention may be applied to a hydraulic gearing, Fig. 21 comprising a pump with a sliding casing 29 to vary the eccentricity of the rotor, and a second machine upon a shaft to be driven by the liquid pumped, the latter having a chamber of fixed eccentricity. The pump may have a fixed eccentricity and the casing of the motor be slidable, or both may be variable.
