Abstract

533,405. Radial cylinder pumps. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., TRAPP, G. J., and FOOTTIT, F. D. Nov. 3, 1939, No. 29352. [Class 102 (i)] In a radial cylinder pump in which the plungers are positively moved on both pressure and suction strokes by means of a driving sleeve turning freely on a rotating crank or eccentric, the inner ends of the plungers 32 are formed with transverse grooves 33 the walls of which converge towards the end faces of the plungers and fit over correspondingly shaped pins 34 which are located by shoes 35 bearing on the driving sleeve 27, radial movement of the shoes and/or pins relative to the sleeve being restrained by means of retaining rings 41. The pins 34 may be cylindrical to fit in grooves 33 which extend over more than a semi-circle, they may be cut away at their ends to substantially semi-cylindrical form for direct engagement by the retaining rings, and they may engage in grooves 37 in the shoes 35. In one modification, the pins pass through apertured lugs on the shoes and the retaining rings engage the shoes beyond the ends of the pins. In another, the ends of the pins are cylindrical but the intermediate portions are wedge-shaped to engage converging flat sides of grooves in the plungers. The pump cylinders 21 may comprise a number of radial bores passing completely through a steel ring 20 of substantially rectangular cross-section, the outer ends of the bores being closed by a ring 24 shrunk on to the ring 20. Alternatively, each or a number of the cylinder bores may be formed in separate sector-shaped blocks. Needle rollers 28 held in position by collars 30, 31 may be disposed between the eccentric 26 and the driving sleeve 27. Fluid admitted by inlet 46 passes through passages 45, central space 44, radial passages 43, and ports 42 into the cylinders 21, and is delivered through recesses at the ends of the cylinders 21 and passages 50, 51 and 52 to an outlet 54, non- return valves 53 being mounted in the passages 51.
