Abstract

518,058. Rotary engines. TUMEY, C. M. Dec. 19, 1938, No. 36964. [Class 110 (ii)] An engine or compressor comprises rotors 10, 12, meshing together by means of teeth 14, and having a number of larger teeth 15 which form pistons in annular working chambers 11, 13. Two rotors 12, 26, Fig. 5, may be arranged on one shaft 21, and two 10, 25, on another shaft 18. The rotors are provided with labyrinth packing rings 19, 20, and further packing 47. Inlet and exhaust ports 30, 29 are provided for each pair of rotors. The working-fluid entering the port 30 may be controlled by a piston in a cylinder 35, cam-operated from the shaft 21 to periodically cut off the fluid, which may be steam. In a modification, two rotors have each, two or more sets of teeth 15 around their peripheries, and their shafts are coupled by external gearing. The valve control means for the working - fluid is dispensed with in this arrangement. The engine may be modified to act as a supercharger.
